On the 9th November 2014, Republic Polytechnic (RP) was presented a token of appreciation at the City Hawker Food Hunt. This is the seventh year this event was held and this year was special due to an industry collaboration with RP to produce a touching video as a tribute to our Pioneer Generation.

The City Hawker Food Hunt, organized by City Gas Ptd Ltd and Shin Min Daily News, is an award ceremony that seeks to promote and celebrate hawker culture as an essential cornerstone of the Singapore identity.

The event was held at Marine Parade Central Hawker Centre, who also won the Cleanest Hawker Centre award. There were over 40 awards presented to the winners that day.

A new category, the Young Hawker Award, was introduced this year. It is presented to those who have managed to stand out against seasoned veterans with their culinary skills and positive attitudes.

Mr. Teo Kwan Hai, Acting Executive Officer of City Gas Ptd Ltd, highlighted on the significance of hawkers in Singapore during his speech, “You should recognize the hard work the hawkers put in to feed our stomachs every day. It is good that their food left a lasting impression, thus preserving Singapore’s hawker heritage.”

A video was presented to over 50 guests focusing on the pioneer contributions and the hawker culture in Singapore. Guest of honour, Mr. Goh Chok Tong, Emeritus Senior Minister & Advisor to Marine Parade GRC, graced the event by attending the award ceremony.

Warren Wang, Director of Centre of Enterprise and Communication (CEC), was invited on stage to receive the token on behalf.

“We are surely proud of what our students have done. It showed together the spirit of the samsui woman and I have watched it quite a few times already beforehand,” said Mr. Wang after the event.

Norazreen Bte Abdul Harris, student from CEC, learned that it is not just about getting the story done for the video, it is also important to gain experience as she learned more about senior citizen’s contributions in Singapore. However, it was not easy for her to understand the topic at first.

“Our video is on Samsui woman and Cantonese is not my forte. I don’t quite understand it. Luckily my teammates and lecturer, Eugene Lim was there to help. If not, it will be impossible for us to produce it,” she commented.
